Overview:

Action Hero is a VR game that lets you take on the mantle of a movie star who’s shooting five different films at the studio lot. That means you get to experience five different movie genres and the whole thing plays out as a first-person shooter that never lets the excitement slow down. If you’ve been looking for an FPS that gives you the chance to live out all your action hero fantasies then this one is going to be worth a good, long look through your headset.

Pros:

Cons:

Intro:

Action Hero gives you a game that perfectly fits its name. You get to live through an actor as you shoot your way through villains from five different action movie genres. It really gives you a level of total fantasy fulfilment that’s tough to come by with most games. You don’t have to learn new mechanics for the different movie sets, either. Once you know how to play the game, you can start blasting your way through fictional bad guys and you won’t have to stop until you clear the stages. It’s a lot of fun and you won’t be bored for a second while you’re playing.

Variety of Villains

As you make your way from set to set, you’re going to be walking on and off different movie sets. That means you get to shoot through Nazis, ninjas, velociraptors, and more. It doesn’t matter if you grew up watching action movies or if you’re just a casual fan, you’re going to immediately recognize the enemies and have fun fighting them. You have to beat each level before you can progress to the next one and fight different enemies. It keeps the action high for the entirety of the game and you won’t have to stop. You even get to shoot through the Nazi level with the Arc of the Covenant as your goal and it doesn’t get any better than that. While nothing is licensed for the game, they make do with plenty of inference.

Prepare to Sweat

With so much action going on, you’re going to sweat a lot while you play this game, and it can probably count as your workout. You have to use the controllers to aim and fire, then you have to move your body around to see where the next enemies are coming. This is probably the closest you can get to a paid VR gaming session in an expensive gaming facility, and you get to do it all right in your home. They don’t hold anything back, so you have to prepare yourself for all the movement before you strap on the headset and start the game. Just keep that in mind and you’ll know what’s coming.

Fast-Paced Game

With all the action and sweating going on, it’s a very good thing you can get through the entire game in about five hours. There are secret locations to explore or dense lore to uncover. You just start shooting and keep shooting until the game is over. Then you get to see your score at the end of each level. You’ll get a trophy based on how well you did with the final level being all about the body count you rack up. That makes it a fun game that doesn’t make you think or bore you with things you don’t care about. That also means it doesn’t take itself too seriously. The game knows exactly what it is and that’s what you get when you turn it on. It’s a shooter first and foremost, with nothing to get in the way.

So-So Graphics

Of course, that also means the graphics aren’t going to appeal to everyone. There’s a cartoonish quality to them that will constantly remind you that you’re playing a game and immersing yourself in an alien world. The explosions are solid-colored affairs of red or yellow that completely blot out everything behind them. It’s more like playing through a comic book than anything else and you may or may not be into it. If you’re looking for a realistically rendered adventure game, this isn’t going to do it for you. If you want a zany shooter with dinosaurs and ninjas, this is where you need to be and you’re going to have a very good time while you’re here.

Action Movie Moves

On top of the shooting, you also get to pull off some action movie moves that you’re going to enjoy pulling off on set. You’ll get the chance to disarm enemies with your bare hands, blow up barrels, and deflect bullets with your gun. If you want more, you can also grab flying weapons out of the air and immediately use them to take down your enemies. It adds a layer of finesse to the shooter and will make you feel like you’re in the middle of The Matrix while you’re playing. That means it has a lot to offer in addition to the shooting and that’s what makes it one of the best new VR games you can play.

Final Thoughts

Anyone looking for a simple shooter should check out Action Hero right away. It’s not a long game, but it’s a fun one that will have you moving and sweating more than most of the options out there. You get to play as an action hero and take on every type of enemy you can think of. You’ll be blasting at ninjas and dinosaurs before long and it will be a lot of fun to go from movie set to movie set. You also get to show off your skills by grabbing flying weapons and deflecting bullets with your gun, so you’re going to feel very accomplished at the end of every level. If you want a VR shooter that’s fun to just turn on and play, then this is the game for you.
