Overview
Deadpool and Wolverine is the first of the Deadpool trilogy to get a 3D release and that’s something we can all be grateful for. The movie itself is a great flick with lots of action and heart, but that doesn’t mean you should be shelling out the extra money to get the full effect. There are lots of great things to love about the 3D version, but that’s only going to get you so far with the movie. All in all, it comes down to your taste. If you really want to see this outing in 3D, it’s going to tick most of your boxes. If you’re happy with the 2D release, its 3D or IMAX counterparts don’t offer enough of a reason to pay the extra money.
Pros
- Lots of pop out for body parts and blood
- Wolverine is finally in his yellow suit
- Great frame breaks
Cons
- Not filmed in native 3D
- Doesn’t use full IMAX screen
- Brightness and dimming make parts muddy
Review
In an effort to keep this review as free of spoilers as possible, we’ll be talking pretty generally about it, but that doesn’t mean we’ll gloss over the facts. The first is that the movie opens up with an amazing action sequence that brings in an organization from Marvel’s other movies and streaming shows. This organization has been explored in depth and seeing it again is a treat for anyone who loves these movies. It also tells you everything you need to know about the multiverse where this Deadpool movie is going to spend all its time. That means you’re going to see your favorite characters portrayed by different actors and these guys do it in the best way possible.
The fact that the movie got an R-rating doesn’t mean that it can’t be wholesome fun that almost everyone can enjoy. The plot revolves around caring for your loved ones and doing everything you possibly can to take care of them. Of course, that’s also the plot of every other Deadpool movie out there. While they’re treading the same ground for this outing, it’s done in a whole new way and that’s what’s going to draw in the audience all over again. It’s a concept they don’t let get stale and that means a lot throughout the entire runtime, so there’s little disappointment to be had.
There are returning characters from the first two movies, but this isn’t the one to watch to get your fill of them. While you get to see a few of your favorites, they only have a few minutes of screen time. Most of the final acts are dedicated to other iterations of Deadpool that you’ll recognize from the comic books. Dogpool and Lady Deadpool have already been shown in the trailers, so it’s okay to mention them here. If you read through Deadpool’s adventures after the Marvel Zombie storyline, you’ll recognize a lot of them and finally get to see them on the big screen.
The 3D elements of the movie have the potential to excite you, but it’s important to understand that it wasn’t created natively for it. It was shot in 2D, then converted by a few different teams. This means that, while the teams did a great job and you’ll be impressed by it, the film didn’t have the 3D experience in mind when it was filmed. If you’re looking for a mind-blowing 3D or IMAX experience, this might not be the movie you want to pick to scratch your itch.
There are some great scenes with pop out effects that have blood splatter and body parts flying out the frame, which you’re going to love and you’ll get a lot of them in the opening minutes of the movie. They chose not to fill the entire IMAX screen, but those pop outs make it an acceptable choice. The real problem comes with the brights and darks. Not making the movie for 3D is most obvious when it comes to that. You’re going to get some muddy visuals that will leave you wanting more. Still, it’s a great movie for 2D, so check it out as soon as you can.
Memorable 3D scenes
- Opening fight scene lots of pop outs
- Woods scene with a beloved character from Logan
- Deadpool Core
- Any of the many Deadpool and Wolverine fight scenes
- Heartfelt conclusion with plenty of payoff for any fan

Final thoughts
Deadpool and Wolverine 3D is a great movie that’s going to deliver lots of action, heart, and humor. If you enjoyed the previous Deadpool movies, this one won’t be any different. The 3D adds a lot to it, but it doesn’t make it worth the extra money. They do a lot with pop outs but there are no aspect ratio changes, and the movie never fills the entire IMAX screen. If you’re a big fan of 3D, then this will be a solid outing for you. If you usually take your movies in 2D then there aren’t enough benefits to make you switch over to the third dimension.
